PictureThe Old Store. 9"x12". Ink on Paper. Copyright 2014. Cristy Dunn.
This is an ink drawing of the old store in Shingletown where all the old time musicians would gather. Doc Watson, Fred Price, Clint Howard, Frank Grayson, and many many more, some famous, others unnamed, but fine musicians nonetheless. Old time music is made to be heard in person, and this was the place to find it for a great many years. Music at the old store lasted until it burned down, sadly, several years ago. The reference picture for this drawing was taken from a photo in the collection of Frank Grayson's family.

Do you recognize any of these musicians? Some of the finest played here, and it didn't cost a dime to sit and listen.

Here's a sample of the kind of music you might hear at an old store in the mountains. This is Kenny Price fiddlin' Cotton Eyed Joe and Sourwood Mountain. This mountain music is catching a second wind.

You can find music like this most any weekend in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, or Northwest North Carolina. Click the link below if you are interested.
